The Book of John-Chapter 15

(1) “I am the true vine (Gen 49.11; Ezek 15; Isa 5-the vine of truth), and my Father is the vinedresser (the Father planted the vine of his human nature, supported it and made it strong as the Messiah. He has returned to Jerusalem from Bethany, John 14.31, and Chapters 15-17 are spoken at the Last Supper, the night of Nisan 13 to 14th. He is giving them last minute instructions before he suffers and is put on the cross on Nisan 14, at 9 am in the morning). (2) Every branch (there are two types of branches in this vine. The professing person and the true believer, the wheat and the tares grow together) in me that does not bear fruit (fruits = results…External works is not what is meant by fruit. Healed marriages, cures from addictions, giving to the needy and the such are great but these can be accomplished by secular sources. A false prophet and teacher can appear righteous. What is meant by fruit is pure doctrinal truth that is consistent with the Torah-Deut 13.1-5; Isa 8.20, true spiritual insight and teachings. We are to test the doctrines of teachers and prophets by the Scriptures), he takes away (removes); and every branch that bears fruit (true doctrine in line with the Torah), he prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. (3) You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you (this is alluding to Lev 19.23-24 and the fruit from trees. The tree is considered “uncircumcised/unclean for three years. In the fourth year the fruit is “holy” and set apart for the Lord). (4) Abide (live) in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself (doctrinal truth in line with the Torah/Scriptures is not something that a person comes up with on his own), unless it abides in the vine (a true believer), so neither can you, unless you abide in me (truly born from above) (5) I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides (lives) in me and I in him, he bears much fruit (the results are consistent with the Torah-v 10) for apart from me you can do nothing (of spiritual good. You may have a big ministry, helping many people but if your teachings are not in line with the Torah it is good for nothing). (6) If anyone does not abide in me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up (unrighteous “trees” are not green with “life”-Psa 1.4-6; Luke 23.28-31); and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned (Ezek 15.2). (7) If you abide in me, and my word (the Torah) abides in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you (this is not to be understood as “name it, claim it” but of spiritual things according to the word of God, his doctrines and his will). (8) By this (what follows) is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and prove to be my talmidim (to my honor). (9) Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; abide in my love. (10) If you keep (do) my commandments (as defined in the Torah-1 Jn 2.3-4.) you will abide in my love (not that doing the commandments depended on whether he would love us, but to those who do observe them he will give further revelation and demonstrations of his love. By doing them you show him that you love him); just as I have kept my Father’s commandments (the Torah), and abide in his love. (11) These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be made full. (12) This is my commandment, that you love one another (also found in the Torah), just as I loved you. (13) Greater love has no one that this, that one lay down his life for his friends (which would be seen shortly). (14) You are my friends if you do what I commanded you (it will appear that they are friends). (15) No longer do I call you slaves (servants), for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you (he told them everything that was on his mind, like Abraham). (16) You did not choose me (he chose them to be “shaliachim” (apostles=sent ones) before they decided to choose him. Who they were had nothing to do with it. This applies to the election of believers also-Eph 1.4), and appointed you (as a “shaliach=a sent one-Mark 3.14), that you should go (sent) and bear fruit (consistent with the Torah. Good fruit does not make the tree good, the tree is good at first and then it brings forth good fruit-Jer 17.10, 21.14; Hos 14.8) and your fruit should remain (their teachings remained in those who heard them and were truly born again), that whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he may give to you (this will encourage them through the difficulties that lie ahead). (17) This I command you, that you love one another. (18) If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before you (starting in Genesis 3.15). (19) If you were of the world, the world would love its own, but because you are not of this world, but I chose you (to be set apart in the ministry that he had for them) out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (20) Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word (with the intent of catching him off guard, to try and find something in what he said to accuse him), they will keep your also. (21) But all these things they will do to you for my name’s sake (because they followed him, were called by his name), because they do not know (Matt 7.21-23) the one who sent me. (22) If I had not come and spoken to them (so they are without excuse), they would not have sin (of rejecting him, of unbelief), but now they have no excuse for their sin (of unbelief). (23) He who hates me hates my Father also. (24) If I had not done among them the works (signs, miracles) which no one else did, they would not have sin, but now they have both seen and hated me and my Father as well (What is the purpose of a miracle or sign? Does it prove that a person id from God? No, it doesn’t because false prophets have dome miracles, and God allows it (Deut 13.1-5). The purpose of a miracle is to call attention to what the person is teaching, the “fruits.” The Lord wants to know if you are going to follow the miracle, disregarding what the person is teaching or are you going to test what that person is teaching against the Torah and the Scriptures. Many follow a ministry that has signs, wonders, miracles but they do not teach the truth. They are being deceived. John the Baptist did no miracles, but taught the truth. God will permit signs among false teachers and prophets to test you-Rev 13.11-15). (25) But in order that the word may be fulfilled (confirmed, given meaning) that is written in their Torah, ‘They hated me without a cause’. ((26) When the helper (comforter, Holy Spirit) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father (on Shavuot, the day the Lord gave the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Father and the Son will send the Spirit, meaning that there is a union between the Father and the Son), the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father (and has the same nature and essence as the Father and the Son), he will bear witness of me (that he is the Messiah, he is God, and with gifts to bear testimony to all that Yeshua did and to refute the enemies of God), (27) and you bear witness (two witnesses= the Spirit and the talmidim) also, because you have been with me from the beginning (of his ministry, as soon as he went public he called them).”
