Tanak Foundations-Concepts in Genesis-Chapters 5-6

Gen 5.1-32 gives us the descendants of Adam through Seth all the way to Noah; this is the beginning of the Messianic line seen in Luke 3.23-38 and these names will give us an interesting prophetic wordplay about the redemption.

v 1…This is the book of the generations (Hebrew “toldot” but written with a “vav” missing; the “vav” in Hebrew is the number six and the LOrd is giving us the information that man’s generations are diminished because of sin) of Adam.

v 2…He created them male and female and he blessed them and named them Man (Adam; here we have the concept of humanity and mankind) in the day they were created.

v 3…When Adam (meaning “blood of God” or “first blood”) had lived for one hundred and thirty years, he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his image (not God’s because Adam lost that when he sinned) and he named him Seth (appointed).

v 4…Then the days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years (alludes to a new beginning), and he had other sons and daughters (not named and not a part of the Messianic line now being named; this explains where Cain’s wives came from).

v 5…So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years and he died (Gen 2.17 says that in the day that Adam ate of the tree, he would physically die; if a day to the Lord is a 1000 years, then no man who sinned would live more than 1000 years, and no one ever did).

v 6…And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and he became the father of Enosh (mortal man).

v 7…Then Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 8…So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.

v 9…And Enosh lived ninety years and became the father of Kenan (habitation).

v 10…Then Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 11…So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.

v 12…And Kenan lived seventy years and became the father of Mahalalel (the blessed God).

v 13…Then Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 14…So all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.

v 15…And Mahalalel lived sixty five years, and became the father of Jared (shall come down).

v 16…Then Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 17…So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.

v 18…And Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years and became the father of Enoch (teaching).

v 19…Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 20…So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.

v 21…And Enoch lived sixty five years, and became the father of Methuselah (his death shall bring), and he had other sons and daughters.

v 22…And Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 23…So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.

v 24…And Enoch walked with God and he was not, for God took him (a term for “died”-Gen 38.7; Psa 37.36, 39.13; not to heaven, nobody could ascend there yet-John 3.13; Heb 11.5 says God took him and that he died in Heb 11.13; God had favor on him).

v 25…And Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and he became the father of Lamech (captives).

v 26…Then Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 27…So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.

v 28…And Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years and became the father of a son.

v 29…Now he called his name Noah (rest), saying, “This one shall give rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed (according to this genealogy Noah was the first man born after the death of Adam; the invention of the plow and other agricultural instruments was attributed to Noah).

v 30…Then Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other sons and daughters.

v 30…So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.

v 32…And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah became the father (not together, but one after another) of Shem (“name” and the middle son; Shem is mentioned first because the Messiah will come from him), Ham (“hot” and the youngest son) and Japheth (“to expand” and the oldest son).

Yehovah’s plan of redemption is contained in this chapter and have a prophecy about it, and that is why we should never neglect a genealogy in the Bible. Look at the names to see a meaning. The names in this list says, “Man is appointed a mortal habitation, but the blessed God shall come down teaching, and his death shall bring the captives rest.”

Gen 6.1-22 tells us about the sins of mankind and the call of Noah to build an Ark; why it must be built and Noah’s obedience to the call.

v 1…Now it came about, when men began to multiply of the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,

v 2…that the sons of God (can mean angels, believers, Adam and kings; in this case these are believers who had the true knowledge of God passed down to them; this term never refers to fallen angels-Rom 8.14; this is the line of Seth who began to call on the name of the Lord in Gen 4.25-26) saw that the daughters of men (unbelieving women) are beautiful and they took wives to themselves (unequally yoked) whomever they chose (like in Judges 3.6-7).

v 3…And the Lord said, “My Spirit (thoughts, intentions, desires) will not strive with man forever (man was the problem here, not fallen angels; the offenders were mankind, and sentence falls directly upon mankind), for that he is only flesh (not only mortal, but corrupt), yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years (this refers to the amount of years mankind had left to repent before he executed judgment-1 Pet 3.20; 2 Pet 3.5-9; this also alludes to the Olam Ha Zeh of 6000 years; take 120 and multiply the 50 year Yovel or Jubilee years, and it comes to 6000 of the Olam Ha Zeh or this present age; God is not going to wait forever; longevity does not produce repentance).”

v 4…The Nephilim (“fallen ones”-from God’s image; also associated with the Rephaim meaning “dead ones”) were in the earth in those days (of Noah), and also afterwards (after the flood-Num 13.33), when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; those were the mighty men (seen as men, not a “race”) who were of old men of renown (they were known for their ferocity and violence-Num 13.33; Deut 1.28; 2 Sam 21.18-22; 1 Chr 20.1-8).

v 5…Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth (he hated sin), and that every intent of their thoughts of the heart (mind, soul, spirit, intentions, desires, purpose) was only evil continually.

v 6…And the Lord repented (was sorry; this doesn’t mean he made a mistake; he is sorry “for their sake” because of what is going to happen) that he made man on the earth, and he was grieved in his heart (for their sake, on their behalf or on account of them).

v 7…And the Lord said, “I will blot out man (from the land of the living) whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and the birds of the sky, for I am sorry that I have made them (the biblical view of life is that all life, whether human or animal, forms one whole-Jonah 4.11; when man disappears, what necessity is there for preserving everything else).

v 8…But Noah (“rest”) found favor (“chen” or grace) in the eyes of the Lord (why is seen in the next verse).

v 9…These are the generations of Noah (Hebrew “toldot” written defectively with the second vav missing; diminished because of sin). Noah was righteous and blameless (which means he had “emunah” or faith in God and walked in obedience to God’s revealed ways at the time-Heb 11.7; he was a preacher of the truth-2 Pet 2.8) in his times. Noah walked with God (some interpret this verse to mean Noah’s generations were the only ones not tainted by “angels” who corrupted the women, and that God sent the flood to destroy these hybrid offspring. But if they interpret the Nephilim to be the offspring of these angelic encounters with women in Gen 6.4, then what are they going to do with the Nephilim in Num 13.33? Were they the offspring of angels and women living again in the days when Israel entered the land? We know the Nephilim did not survive the flood, so where did they come from? Why didn’t God destroy everyone again if the human race was tainted again in Num 13? It’s because this whole “angels having relations with human women” is a myth and doesn’t even make sense. Noah’s wife and daughter’s-in-law weren’t from his “generations”, and yet were saved. Then we have the whole problem with DNA and the ability of angels to even produce anything with a human. Yeshua said himself that when we are in the Olam Haba we will not be in a marriage relationship and procreating, but we will be like the angels who do not).

v 10…And Noah became the father of three sons; Shem, Ham and Japheth.

v 11…Now the earth was corrupt (immoral) in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence (Hebrew “Hamas”-ruthless and they trampled on the rights of the weak and did violence to God’s ways of righteousness-Matt 5.17).

v 12…And God looked on the earth and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh (“kol basar”) had corrupted their way upon the earth.

v 13…Then God said to Noah (anyone who walks with God is also a recipient of divine counsel-Gen 18.17), “The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is filled with violence (to righteousness) because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth (the things upon the earth).

v 14…Make for yourself an ark (“tayvat” meaning a vessel to float-Exo 2.3) of gopher (“gopher” or resinous) wood (that would not admit water); you shall make the ark with rooms (literally “nests” and speaks of rest) and shall cover (Hebrew “kapar” and has the same root as “kippur” meaning an atonement or a restoration of a covering) it inside and out (alluding to the spirit and body in redemption) with pitch (“koper” and also related to “kippur”).

v 15…And this is how you should make it; the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits and the height thirty cubits.

v 16…And you shall make a window (Hebrew “zohar” meaning light or whitening, and related to the word for clean “tahor”) for the ark and finish it to a cubit from the top; and set the door (Hebrew “upetah” to gain access; alludes to Yeshua in John 10.9) of the ark in the side of it; you shall make it with lower, second, and third stories (decks).

v 17…And behold, I, even I, am bringing the flood (Hebrew “marbul” and this word is only used to denote the flood of Noah; Yeshua only died once for all to give us rest-Rom 6.9-11; Heb 7.27) of water (it is certain) upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish (everything outside of God will perish also).

v 18…And I will establish my covenant with you (in the sense of a promised agreement), and you shall enter the ark-you and your sons and your wife and your son’s wives (redemption of man).

v 19…And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female (the redemption of creation; everything that entered the ark came in because God willed it; his influence of them caused them to come; this is a picture of how we were chosen before the foundation of the world and come to him-Eph 1.4; Acts 13.48).

v 20…Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after their kind, two of every kind shall come to you to keep them alive (and hidden in the ark; this is a picture of being hidden in Messiah but we must come to him-Col 3.1-4).

v 21…And as for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible and gather it to yourself, and it shall be food for you and for them (food is a picture of the word of God that sustains us also-Matt 4.4).”

v 22…Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did (so did Yeshua in preparing the “ark” that will save his elect and the creation).
