Tanak Foundations-Concepts in Jeremiah-Chapter 33

Jer 33.1-26 is a continuation of the blessings that will be a feature of the return from Babylon, but also of the Second Redemption when Messiah comes.

v 1…Then the word of the Lord (Yehovah) came to Jeremiah the second time (on the same subject), while he was still confined in the court of the guard (but Yehovah’s word wasn’t), saying,

v 2…”Thus says the Lord who made it (Jerusalem), the Lord who formed it and established it, the Lord (Yehovah) is his name,

v 3…’Call to me, and I will answer you (Jeremiah), and I will tell you great and mighty (fortified like a fortified city that cannot be entered unless the gates are opened) things, which you do not know (to encourage him).’

v 4…”For thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are broken down to make a defense against the siege mounds and against the sword (to defend themselves),

v 5…’While they are coming to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the corpses of men whom I have slain in my anger, and I have hidden my face from this city because of all their wickedness:

v 6…Behold, I will bring it (Jerusalem) health and healing (after the exile and after the birth-pains), and I will heal them, and I will reveal to them an abundance of peace and truth,

v 7…And I will restore the fortunes (return the exiles) of Judah and the fortunes (captives) of Israel, and I will rebuild them as they were at first (when he brought them to Sinai and their betrothal).

v 8…And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned against me, and by which they have transgressed against me (this is a Yom Kippur passage and the basis for the Messianic Redemption).

v 9…And it (Jerusalem) shall be to me a name of joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth (after the exile, and in the future because the Messiah and the believers are there), which shall hear of all the good that I do for them, and they shall fear and tremble because of all the good and all the peace that I will make for it (Jerusalem will be an example of God’s mercy and knowledge of God).'”

v 10…”Thus says the Lord, ‘Yet again there shall be heard in this place, of which you say, “It is a waste, without man and without beast,” in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast (the damage from Babylon already done),

v 11…The voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride (in the Mishnah, Sotah 9.14, it says that weddings with the Aperion stopped. However, they have started again in 1992 as a sign of this), the voice of those who say, “Give thanks to the Lord of hosts, for the Lord (Yehovah) is good, for his lovingkindness is everlasting”; and of those who bring a thank offering (Korban Todah) into the house of the Lord. For I will restore the fortunes of the land as they were at first (as they were intended to be),’ says the Lord.

v 12…”Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘There shall again be in this place which is waste, without man or beast, and in all its cities, a habitation of shepherds who rest their flocks (peace).

v 13…In all the cities of the hill country (mountains), in the cities of the lowland (Shephelah Valley), in the cities of the Negev (south), in the land of Benjamin, in the places (suburbs) of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, the flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who numbers them,’ says the Lord.

v 14…’Behold (see), days are coming (after the exile and when Messiah comes),’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill (give meaning to) the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel (ten northern tribes) and the house of Judah (two southern tribes).

v 15…In those days (b’yamim-v 15-16 basically repeats Jer 23.5-6) and at that time (when Messiah comes with the Messianic Redemption ultimately-Joel 3.1) that I will cause a righteous branch (tzemach and a term for Messiah (Zech 6.9-14) of David to spring forth; and he shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth.

v 16…In those days (“his” days in 23.6) Judah will be saved (Jer 30.7) and Jerusalem shall dwell in safety, and this is the name by which she (the bride symbolized by Jerusalem. In Jer 23.5-6 it says “he” shall be called. A marriage has taken place and the bride and groom are “echad” or one flesh-Eph 5.22-23) shall be called ‘the Lord is our righteousness (Yehovah Tzedkaynu).’

v 17…For thus says the Lord, ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel (because it is an eternal kingdom in Messiah Yeshua);

v 18…and the Levitical priests (in the future Messianic Temple) shall never lack a man before me to offer burnt offerings (Korban Olah), to burn (make smoke) grain offerings (Korban Mincha), and to prepare sacrifices continually (this is a future Temple passage because there are none now so this must mean when Messiah comes-Isa 66.19-21. Replacement Theology says the sacrifices have been done away with, but if that were true than verse 17 is no longer valid either, along with any passage or chapter that talks about korbanot when Messiah comes, and their are chapters on this subject. The kingship and the priesthood are mentioned because the two “pillars” were destroyed when Jerusalem and the Temple fell, whether it was by the Babylonians or the Romans. When Messiah returns, this will be restored).”

v 19…And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah (the “davar” is a person-John 1.1), saying,

v 20…”Thus says the Lord, ‘If you can break my covenant for the day, and my covenant for the night (Jer 31.35), so that day or night will not be at their appointed time,

v 21…then my covenant may also be broken with David my servant that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levitical priests, my ministers.

v 22…As the host of heaven cannot be counted (the stars), and the sand of the sea cannot be measured, so will I multiply the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister to me.”

v 23…And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,

v 24…”Have you not observed what these people have spoken, saying, ‘The two families (Judah and Israel) which the Lord chose, he has rejected them (like people say today)?’ Thus they despise my people, no longer are they as a nation in their sight (this is the basic premise of Replacement Theology, and their enemies thought they were being destroyed. Its the same today with people who think God has rejected Israel for the “church” or any other religious system in the world. He has already said this was impossible and explains it again).

v 25…Thus says the Lord, ‘If my covenant for day and night stand not, and the fixed patterns of heaven and earth I have not established (orderly laws of the universe),

v 26…then I would reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant, not taking from his descendants rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will restore their fortunes (captives), and will have mercy on them (v 19-26 should put an end to Replacement Theology-Jer 31.31-37; Isa 66.19-24).”
