Tanak Foundations-Concepts in Jeremiah-Chapter 43

Jer 43.1-13 gives us the answer of the commanders and the people to Yehovah’s words about Egypt. Some of the people are named and their intentions revealed, even going so far as to accuse Jeremiah of lying and Baruch of inciting the people against the leaders so that they can be turned over to Babylon and be put to death or exiled. In short, they do not believe Yehovah’s words spoken by Jeremiah.

v 1…But it came about, as soon as Jeremiah whom the Lord (Yehovah) their God had sent had finished telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God (of whom they “professed” to believe in)-that is all these words (in the previous chapter-

v 2…that Azariah the son of Hoshiah and Johanan the son Kereah (headed the move), and all the arrogant men (proud of their descent and greatness), said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie (it being against what they had in mind)! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You are not to enter Egypt to reside there,’

v 3…but Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to give us over into the hands of the Chaldeans (they thought he was a Babylonian sympathizer), so they may put us to death or exile us to Babylon.”

v 4…So Johanan the son of Kereah and all the commanders of the forces, and all the people, did not obey the voice of the Lord so as to stay in the land of Judah (they didn’t believe the Lord).

v 5…But Johanan the son of Kereah and all the commanders of the forces took the entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been driven away, in order to reside in the land of Judah (those who survived or had come back after fleeing the Babylonians)-

v 6…the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters (Zedekiah’s) and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the executioners (bodyguard) had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, together with Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah (they were forced to go)-

v 7…and they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Lord) and went in as far as Tahpanhes (or Hanes in Isa 30.4 and Tehaphnehes in Ezek 30.18. This was very impious because they gave an oath using the name of Yehovah to follow whatever Jeremiah said. God allowed Jeremiah to go to speak against the Egyptians as well as Judah, who trusted them. The very things they were avoiding was going to confront them in the end).

v 8…Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

v 9…”Take some large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar (clay) and brick terrace which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of some of the Jews (who would at once want to know what that signified);

v 10…and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts (armies), the God of Israel, “Behold (see for yourself), I am going to send and bring Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant (in the sense of performing his will, unlike you who disobey me), and I am going to set his throne right over these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his canopy (royal pavilion) over them.

v 11…He will also come and strike the land of Egypt, those who are meant (by God’s sovereignty and will) for death to death, and those for captivity to captivity, and those for the sword to the sword.

v 12…And I shall set fire to the temple of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them (the wood idols) and take them captive (the gold and silver ones). So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt (covered with the spoils) as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment and depart from there safely (none can stop him).

v 13…He (God uses Nebuchadnezzar) will also shatter the obelisks of the house of the sun (Heliopolis) which is the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.”
