Tanak Foundations-Concepts in Song of Songs-Chapter 7

Song 7.1-5 has the nations responding to Israel/kahal/bride.

v 1…How beautiful are your feet in sandals (especially to celebrate the festivals-Deut 16.16), O princes daughter (Abraham’s offspring through Isaac and Jacob, of noble character-the Jewish people)! The curves of your hips (flanks) are like jewels; the work of the hands of an artist (God the master artist).

v 2…Your navel is like a round goblet (to hold and retain the Torah) which never lacks mixed wine (the teaching of the Torah never stops. Israeli wine was mixed with water because it was strong. This alludes to the Torah being mixed with the water of the Ruach Ha Kodesh to get the best-intended result); your belly (center) is like a heap of wheat (bread of life, the word, meaning fruitful) fenced about (hedged in) with lilies (shoshanim or roses meaning the slightest barrier of thorns to keep from sin, only an unbeliever would trample the sanctions of the Torah).

v 3…Your two breasts (two tablets of the Torah from Sinai under which all commandments fall under; pure milk of the word-2 Pet 2.2) are like two fawns (sure-footed), twins of a gazelle (complement one another).

v 4…Your neck is like a tower of ivory (erect, pure, and strong to bear the yoke of the Torah), your eyes (the wise leaders, great teachers) like the pools of Heshbon (flowed with living water of wisdom to the nations-Deut 4.6) by the gate of Bat-Rabbim (“daughter of many” because a multitude went through that gate); your nose (the source of life in Gen 2.7 and the most distinctive feature on a face) is like the Tower of Lebanon (the House of the Forest of Lebanon or “Beit ha Yair ha Levanon” was the most beautiful feature in the Temple-1 Kings 7.2), which faces toward Damascus (her worst enemy does not frighten her, and Damascus will be the future boundary-Zech 9.1).

v 5…Your head upon you is like Carmel (high, beautiful) and the flowing locks of your head are like purple (argamon) threads (much admired); the king is captivated (fettered) by your tresses (flowing hair).

Song 7.6-9 is Yehovah/Messiah/groom talking to Israel/kahal/bride.

v 6…How beautiful and how pleasant you are (similar to Song 1.15) in delights, O love!

v 7…Your stature (tall, erect) is like a palm tree (‘tamar” and the tree of righteousness-Psa 92.12) and your breasts (dispensers of the pure milk of the word-1 Pet 2.2) are clusters (like grape clusters were for wine; many excellent doctrines).

v 8…I said, “I will climb the palm tree (be elevated by Israel/kahal/bride), I will take hold of its fruit stalks (branches, the children of Israel/kahal/bride good deeds). Oh (I beg you), may your breasts (dispensers of the Torah, teachers) be like clusters (grape clusters, many) of the vine (sources of teaching), and the fragrance of your breath (breathing after the Torah and spiritual things).

v 9…And your mouth like the best wine (full of truth and teaching-Mark 2.19-22)! It (the wine, teaching) goes down smoothly for my beloved, flowing (moving) gently the lips of those who fall asleep (the Torah is so strong it moves the spirit of those asleep spiritually).

Song 7.10-13 is the response of Israel/kahal/bride to Yehovah/ Messiah/groom.

v 10…I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me (mutual relationship).

v 11…Come, my beloved, let us go out into the field (out of the city and the crowd where we can talk). Let us spend the night in the villages.

v 12…Let us rise early and go to the vineyards (of prayer and study, planted fruitful vines in Israel), let us see whether the vine has budded (fruit of all the learning has manifested) and the blossoms have opened, and the pomegranates have blossomed (ready to instruct the mature).

v 13…The mandrakes (sweet, pleasant flowers) have given forth fragrance (ready) and over our doors are the choice fruits, both new and old (fruits of good works performed, both in the past and now), which I have saved up for you, my beloved (a picture of the commandments hidden in the heart-Psa 31.20; Matt 11.25, 13.11-17).
