Tanak Foundations-Concepts in Second Kings-Part 7

2 Kings 10.1-11 tells us Yehu executes the descendants of Ahab and all his great men, close friends and priests. In 2 Kings 10.12-14 he executes 42 members of Ahaziah’s family. 2 Kings 10.15-17 goes on to tell us that he also went to Samaria and killed the remainder of Ahab’s family. Then he goes out to destroy Baal worshipers in 2 Kings 10.18-23 and wipes out Baal worship in Israel in 2 Kings 10.24-28. But after all this, Yehu did not turn away from the sins of Jereboam who made Israel sin with the golden calves in Bethel and Dan.

2 Kings 10.32-36 tells us that the Lord used Hazael of Syria to cut off portions from Israel. The land east of the Jordan held by Gad, Reuben and Manasseh was lost due to their unfaithfulness. Yehu died and they buried him in Samaria after reigning 28 years. His son Yehoahaz became king.

2 Kings 11.1-21 is one of the best eschatological pictures of the Redemption and the coronation of Yeshua as the Messiah we have in the Scriptures. As a result, we are going to go into more detail on this than we normally do. Ahaziah (“God has taken”) was king in Judah and as we have said before, Athaliah (“afflicted of Yah”) was his mother. She is the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel and the apple did not fall far from the tree with her. Athaliah was the queen mother in Judah (2 Chr 15.16; Jer 13.18) and they ruled as the queen in Judah, not the wife of the king.

After Yehu killed Ahaziah (2 Chr 22.9), Athaliah began to kill all the royal offspring as queen mother. She will be a type of HaSatan, Herod, Pharaoh in this story who tried to kill the royal offspring in the Scriptures. She will also be a picture of the False Messiah.

Yehosheba (“oath/completeness of Yehovah”) was the daughter of King Yehoram and a sister to Ahaziah. She took the only remaining royal offspring of King Ahaziah, a son named Yoash (“fire of Yehovah”), and placed him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah as she was killing the other sons of the king. This bedroom was one of the chambers of the kohanim (priests) and Levites in the Temple where they slept. He remained in the House of the Lord (the Temple) for six years while Athaliah ruled over the land.

This alludes to Yeshua being “hidden” in Heaven 6000 years while Ha Satan, Pharaoh, Herod and all the other types of the False Messiah made war on the sons of the king (believers). In Jewish thought it was believed that the Messiah would be hidden, then appear again (Isa 49.1-26; “The Messiah Texts” by Rafael Patai). This chapter gives us a glimpse into some eschatological events. It gives us the time of Yeshua’s coronation, the place of the coronation and the “revealing” of the son.

In the seventh year (“the Day of the Lord”) Yehoida (“Knowledge of Yehovah”) the High Priest brought soldiers and guards into the Temple. He knows that the true king has been hidden in the Temple for six years (6000 years) and he made a covenant with these soldiers and guards and put them under an oath in the Temple before Yehovah. He then revealed to them that the only remaining son of Ahaziah was alive. This “revealing” of the son is a picture of the Natzal (rapture) when the believers are called up to the Temple in Heaven to see the king’s son (Yeshua) and be there for his coronation (Rev 4-5). This will happen on Yom Teruah, also known as Rosh Ha Shanah, which will be the first day of the seventh millennium, Tishri 1, year 6001 from creation. This “day” of a thousand years is also known as the Sabbath of God, The Lord’s Day, the Atid Lavo and the Millennium.

These soldiers were Temple guards and they were told that one third of them who come in on the Sabbath in their courses will keep watch over the king’s “house.” One third will be at the Gate Sur, also called the “Shaar (gate) Yesod” or “gate of foundation” in 2 Chr 23.5. Later it was called the Beit Ha Moked (northwest corner of the azarah/court) and called Shaar Yeconiah. One third would also also be at the gate behind the guards. This will be the same as the “Shaar Ha Elyon” or “Upper Gate.” This was also called the “Shaar Achar” and “Achar ha Ratzim” (“behind the runners/guards”) or “Western Gate of the Runners.” The word “achar” can also mean “west” in the House of the Forest of Lebanon in the southwest corner of the azarah, later to be known as “Beit Ha Otzrot.” Two parts of these guards, all who go out on the Sabbath, will also keep watch over the house of the Lord for the king.

As we know, the priests and the Levites served for one week in the Temple according to their “mishmarot” or courses, from one Sabbath to the next (2 Chr 24.7; 2 Chr 23.4). They would come in and relieve the previous course. The altar would be cleansed and the 12 loaves of bread that were on the Shulchan Ha Lechem ha Pannim would be changed. Yeshua will be in the house of the Lord in heaven where his enemies cannot go. He will reveal himself at the appointed time (“moed” meaning “rehearsal”) of Yom Teruah (Tishri 1-Num 29.1). So, these guards would come in with the priests and Levites every Sabbath. They were given weapons by the priests, and these weapons were kept in an armory in the Chamber (Lishkat) of the Guards in the House of the Forest of Lebanon (2 Chr 12.9-11).

Now we come to the part of the story that is a picture of the coronation of Yeshua as seen in Rev 4 and 5, and Dan 7.9-14. Both of these passages are considered Yom Teruah (Rosh Ha Shannah) passages. There are five aspects to the coronation of a Judean king. These five steps are the Investiture with Insignia, The Anointing, the Acclamation, the Enthronement and the Homage.

In Part 8 we will pick up in 2 Kings 11.12 and look at the coronation of Yoash and see that this is a picture of the coronation of Yeshua.
